Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Helen Ogbu met with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson yesterday (12 August 2026) for a strategic roundtable discussion focused on shared priorities including diversity, youth opportunity, climate resilience, education, and cultural exchange.
The conversation highlighted the deep historical connections between Ireland and Chicago, and the evolving identities of both cities as diverse, outward‑looking, and community‑driven. Both Mayors reflected on the importance of civic partnership, shared learning, and strengthening ties with the Irish diaspora.
They discussed common challenges and opportunities — supporting underserved communities, investing in young people, and building sustainable cities shaped by water — emphasising the value of collaboration between Galway and Chicago.
“Today is really about connection — between our cities, our histories, our priorities, and our people,” Mayor Ogbu said.
The meeting reinforced the strength of the Galway–Chicago Sister City relationship and identified new areas for partnership across culture, education, and community development.
