Public Lighting Update May 2026

Galway City Council in association with its public lighting maintenance contractor has initiated a programme of public lighting upgrade works across the city.

The program will include the removal and replacement of public lighting infrastructure including columns and fittings, cabling and ducting and associated works and commissioning in accordance with relevant standards and specifications. 

The unbundling works program will enable proper disconnection and testing procedures to be followed and ensure the public light installations is compliant with modern standards for earthing and safety.

The next locations for emergency upgrade work have been identified in the following estates, to be progressed during Q1 and Q2 2026:

  • Pollnarooma West
  • Rahylin Glebe and Rockland Avenue
  • Tirellan Heights 
  • Clareview Park 

In Q2/Q3 2025, the following estates will be progressed:

  • Lurgan Park
  • Lakeshore Drive to Mellows Park
  • Murrough and Beach Ave Drive
  • Castle Park Phase 2
  • Siobhan McKenna Road Phase 1

Residents in each of these estates will receive advance notification of the proposed works. 

Additional locations are currently being assessed for upgrade works in Q3 / Q4 2026 and will be published once finalised
