11 staff with over 230 years of service to the communities of Galway City will feature in a video in celebration of local authorities as part of the national Your Council Day on Friday 27 June.

Available on Galway City Council social media accounts, participants share highlights on their experience of working at Galway City Council over a combined 23 decades of service (see ‘Galway City Council’ on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Linked In).

The video is part of an annual campaign, coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) to promote the vital work of city and county councils, and the people behind the services that support our communities every day.

Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Mike Cubbard, commented, “Your Council Day is a powerful reminder of the essential role Galway City Council plays in the lives of our residents, our businesses, our visitors, and our various stakeholders and communities. This day is about celebrating the people behind the services and capital projects that support our City to thrive and grow, and promoting the connection between Galway City Council and the communities we proudly serve”.

Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive, Galway City Council said, “Galway City Council is the closest form of government to the people and communities we serve. Across Your Council Day on Friday 27 June, our staff will be supporting the people of Galway in activities as diverse as registering to vote; applying for planning permission; booking a community centre for a game of football; taking a swim in Leisureland; going for a walk in the city parks or woods; applying for housing rental supports; or taking a bus or a cycle on newly constructed bus and cycle facilities. Over 630 fantastic staff are the life blood of the local authority - building and serving the communities in our city, working in partnership, every day of the year. We look forward to continued collaboration and engagement with the people of Galway City”.

This year’s theme, Building Stronger Communities, highlights how local authorities foster environments where people feel connected, supported, and empowered to thrive.

Local Authorities deliver over 1,000 vital services that touch every aspect of daily life. Street cleaning, road maintenance, housing, urban planning, dog wardens, management of parks, fire services, arts and heritage, tourism, and community events — these are just a small snapshot of the wide-ranging work carried out by local authorities every day.

The video will stream on Galway City Council social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Linked In) on Friday 27 June.
