The Irish Walled Towns Network and Galway City Council Architectural Conservation and Heritage are delighted to be hosting ‘Discovering Buildings Archaeology’ in Galway City on 17 September 2025.
Buildings Archaeology is a specialised sub-discipline of archaeology, focused primarily on the archaeology of above ground remains. The aim of the buildings archaeologist is to reconstruct the history of standing buildings and structures through analytical, scientific, archival and survey methods.
The importance of this approach has become increasingly recognised in an Irish context in recent years and this has been reflected in the attachment of buildings archaeology conditions to conservation grant funding, planning applications, and archaeological consents.
‘Discovering Buildings Archaeology’ will provide an introduction to the discipline, with recognised experts – including Dr. Shirly Markley, Director of the Certificate in Buildings Archaeology at ATU Sligo and representatives of the National Monuments Service and National Built Heritage Service – and will offer plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.
Site visits in the afternoon will allow attendees to identify the remains of early buildings in Galway City, and consider the application of a buildings archaeology approach in practice.
This event is of general interest, and will be of particular interest to archaeologists, architects, conservation practitioners, specifiers and those commissioning archaeological assessments.
The aim of the event is to outline what should be involved in a buildings archaeology approach to recording and specification and to provide a sense of what can be gained by its application.
