Galway City Council is proud to announce that its Climate Action and Sustainability Team has been awarded “Team of the Year” at the 2025 Ireland Climate Change Leadership Awards. The award ceremony took place on Friday 3 October, at the Royal Marine Hotel in Dún Laoghaire, celebrating organisations across Ireland that demonstrate outstanding leadership and innovation in climate action.
The award recognises the team's exceptional cross-departmental collaboration, community engagement, and delivery of pioneering climate projects, including the NetZeroCities Pilot Cities Programme, the Westside renewable energy-powered eMobility Hub, the Galway Climate Inspirations Festival, and the Grattan Beach Living Lab.
Derek Pender, Director of Services, Project Development, stated that “This award is a testament to the dedication and creativity of our Climate Action Team. Their work exemplifies how local government can lead on climate action through collaboration, innovation, and a strong connection with the community.”
The announcement comes during Climate Action Week 2025, a national initiative highlighting the importance of local climate leadership. Galway’s win reinforces the city’s commitment to sustainability through its climate action plan and its role in shaping Ireland’s climate future.
