Galway City Museum is excited to announce the launch of its new educational initiative, Galway in Objects, designed to engage local schoolchildren with the rich history and culture of Galway through interactive learning experiences.
Galway in Objects aims to foster a deeper understanding of the city’s heritage by encouraging participants to observe, question, and respond to historical objects, including the statue of Pádraic Ó Conaire, Claddagh Ring, Galway Shawl and Penfold Postbox.
The project provides teachers with bespoke resources, including lesson plans and activity guides, to support classroom learning. These materials are designed to promote critical thinking and creativity, aligning with the primary school curriculum in history, English, Gaeilge, and the Visual Arts.
A dedicated microsite within www.GalwayCityMuseum.ie has been developed to host these resources, including short films featuring experts and photographs that can be used to support the learning process. The materials can be used independently or, ideally, in conjunction with a visit to Galway City Museum. Anyone with an interest in Galway’s history will appreciate this new resource.
The Galway in Objects project has been funded by Creative Ireland through Galway City Council. The project is now available to all schools for the foreseeable future.
School groups wishing to engage with the project can email Museum@GalwayCity.ie.
From 1 to 5 July, Galway City Museum is also hosting a teacher’s CDP course, in conjunction with the Galway Education Centre, based on the project. The course promotes using objects for teaching and incorporating creative activities – art, drama and storytelling - around objects, while making teachers aware of the Museum as an educational resource. Full details can be found on the Galway Education Centre website, www.GalwayEC.ie .
Current Museum exhibitions include The Battle of Aughrim; Surrounded by Stone; Keepers of the Gael | Caomhnóirí na nGael; Revolution in Galway, 1913-23; The Galway Hooker; The Claddagh: A Triumph of Unconscious Beauty, SUPERHUMAN | FORDHAONNA and The Wild Atlantic - Sea Science.
Galway City Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am – 5pm and Sundays, 12pm – 5pm (Galleries close at 4:45pm). Admission is FREE! All upcoming events and exhibitions are listed on the Museum’s website at www.GalwayCityMuseum.ie.
