Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), and Noel Grealish TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, met with senior representatives from Galway City Council last week (Friday 27 June 2025) to discuss the Coirib go Cósta Galway City Flood Relief Scheme. The objective of Coirib go Cósta is to assess, design and deliver a flood relief scheme that is technically, socially, environmentally, aesthetically and economically acceptable, to alleviate the risk of flooding to the Community of Galway City to a determined Standard of Protection. Public consultation is currently live on the scheme options, with a significant attendance at recent public information days, held in both Salthill and the city centre areas.
Coirib go Cósta is one of Galway City Council’s key priorities in the City’s Submission to the Programme for Government. This investment programme by National Government is vital to ensuring Galway City delivers on targets in the National Planning Framework/ National Development Plan; continues to thrive; and remains a world-class destination to live, visit, and do business.
Ministers Moran and Grealish expressed support for the proposed scheme and welcomed the recent public engagement events, whilst also highlighting the urgency for the scheme’s delivery.
As a coastal city, built on the river Corrib, water is a part of the fabric of Galway City.
Coirib go Cósta is primarily focused on the management of flood risk, however Galway City Council will strive to ensure that the design of any measures - in particular structural measures - recognise the distinctive character of Galway city. All works will include creative landscape and architectural solutions, which in addition to addressing flood risk management, will enhance the urban landscape.
