Healthy Galway City and Galway City Age Friendly invites you to ‘Social Steps’, a series of dance workshops for over 55s. Dance workshops take place on Mondays in Westside Community Centre, Ballybane Community Resource, and Ballinfoile Castlegar Neighbourhood Centre.

Professional Social Dance Teacher Niall Doorhy leads these very popular classes, demonstrating dances such as line dancing, jive, waltzing and more. Classes are suitable for all abilities and experience levels, with no experience required and a focus on fun, gentle exercise and social connection.

‘Social Steps’ classes are designed for adults over 55 and are completely free to attend. No commitment is required and participants can come as they please.

“Dancing is a proven and enjoyable way to stay fit and well”, says Healthy Galway City Coordinator Aisling Colreavy. “Benefits include improved heart and lung functioning, increased muscular strength, improved co-ordination, flexibility and overall fitness.  Dance is also associated with enhanced mental functioning, improved wellbeing and greater self-confidence and self-esteem.”

Now in its second year, ‘Social Steps’ has proven a success with regular attendees. “The classes are so enjoyable,” reported one participant. “The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, Niall is a fantastic teacher, and I always enjoy myself and feel great after a class.”

If you are over the age of 55 and you would be interested in attending one of the ‘Social Steps’ classes, please contact Nessa Egan to register on 087 488 5383 or email Nessa.Egan@GalwayCity.ie

This project is funded through the Healthy Ireland Fund supported by the Department of Health, and the Galway City Age Friendly Programme supported by Galway City Council.
