Galway City Council wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to the public, local historians, and civic partners following the resounding success of National Heritage Week 2026.
From 15 - 23 August, city libraries, community spaces, and civic venues came alive with energy, drawing record crowds to a diverse and inspiring programme of events celebrating Galway's unique cultural, historical, and natural identity.
This year’s flagship Council events captured the imagination of both locals and visitors, with key highlights including:
- The Walking Tour of Medieval Galway: Led by the City Councils Heritage Officer Dr. Jim Higgins, these tours brought Galway's foundational history to life for large crowds.
- Galway City Museum Exhibitions: Featuring immersive workshops, community digitization projects, and cultural showcases that engaged audiences of all ages.
- Biodiversity & Natural Heritage Walks: Interactive community sessions exploring and highlighting the vital need to preserve local canals, coastal areas, and green spaces.
- Vernacular Heritage Survey and Walking Tour: Introduced by Michael Scott, Architectural Conservation Officer the launch of the survey at Fahys Farm, Ballindooley, which outlined its key findings and the ambitious proposals to record and celebrate Galway City’s vernacular heritage.
In addition to these flagship activities, highly popular events were hosted across the city at historic and educational landmarks, including Tours of Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa Museum and Saint Patrick’s Garrison Church Renmore, Forthill Cemetery, Menlo Castle, University of Galway (UG) and talks on Ireland’s Culture and Landscape at the Atlantic Technological University (ATU).
The success of the week was made possible through the tireless work of the dedicated staff within Galway City Council working alongside passionate local historians, architects and civic partners to deliver a fully accessible, educational, and inspiring programme.
