Galway City Council is pleased to announce the launch of its new Residents’ Association Handbook, a practical guide designed to support and strengthen new and existing residents’ associations across the city.

The handbook has been developed to provide clear, accessible information for existing and emerging residents’ associations, covering topics such as setting up an association, good governance, effective communication, funding opportunities, and working collaboratively with Galway City Council.

To accompany the launch, Galway City Council will host a series of in-person information sessions across the city’s West, East and Central Wards, ensuring residents and community groups in all areas have an opportunity to learn more about the handbook.

The information sessions will:

  • Introduce the Residents’ Association Handbook and its key resources
  • Explain how residents’ associations can engage with the Council
  • Provide guidance on best practice and available supports
  • Offer an opportunity for networking and discussion

Information Sessions

  • East Ward: Tuesday 26 May at 6pm , Ballybane Community Hub
  • West Ward: Wednesday 27 May at 6pm , Cappagh Park Community Centre
  • Central Ward: Thursday 28 May at 6.30pm , the Harbour hotel

All residents, whether currently involved in a residents’ association or interested in becoming more active in their community, are encouraged to attend.

Urban Community and Development Officer, Deirdre Keaney Cunningham said:

“Residents’ associations play a vital role in strengthening communities and supporting local democracy. This handbook responds directly to the needs raised by communities across the city and aims to provide practical, user-friendly guidance to support residents in shaping their neighbourhoods.”

The Residents’ Association Handbook will be available online on the Galway City Council website following the launch, with printed copies available at the information sessions.

Further details on session dates, venues and registration will be shared in advance through the Council’s website and social media channels.
