Galway City Council is delighted to announce the return of the Spaces for Biodiversity Competition for 2026. The initiative celebrates and promotes biodiversity-friendly private gardens, public areas, schools, and community spaces across the city.

Winners across all categories will be honoured at an awards ceremony in November, with prizes including a first-place award, vouchers, and framed certificates. The competition continues to be sponsored by the well-known local garden centre and café Dangan House nurseries.

The competition highlights the crucial role that small-scale spaces play in supporting environmental sustainability and protecting pollinators. Participants are encouraged to think creatively about how to transform areas—from residential gardens to public grounds—into thriving habitats. Special consideration will be given to designs that provide food, shelter, and safety for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Fergal Cushen, Environmental Awareness Officer for Galway City Council, emphasised the collective impact of individual efforts:

“Private gardens collectively make up a large area of habitats, and potential habitats across our city. This competition encourages that potential to create important ‘niches for nature’, right on our own doorstep. We’re not looking for perfectly manicured gardens—we want to celebrate the wild edges, the native blooms, and the small spaces managed with biodiversity in mind. The City Council also is very grateful for the continued support of Dangan House nurseries as a sponsor for the competition.”

Last year’s competition drew a remarkable array of creative, wildlife-friendly spaces, with participants demonstrating deep pride in their contributions. The initiative aligns with Galway City Council’s Biodiversity Action Plan and Climate Action Plan, aiming to raise awareness about protecting and enhancing urban biodiversity.

The competition is open to all areas of Galway City, including residential properties, schools, community groups, and businesses. It offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the efforts of residents while promoting sustainable environmental practices.

Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Mike Cubbard expressed his excitement for this annual competition:

“Galway residents have always shown incredible pride in caring for their city and its surroundings. This competition gives the Council a meaningful way to recognize that dedication and inspire even more people to take part and see their own outdoor spaces as valuable havens for nature.”

The Spaces for Biodiversity Competition represents a collective commitment to making Galway a greener, more sustainable city where every small space is recognized as vital to local wildlife.
