Galway City Council marked the launch of the West Area Integrated Urban Strategy (IUS) at a THRIVE event in Galway Arts Centre and Áras na nGael, Dominick Street, on Friday, 3 July.

The event brought together community organisations, local businesses, elected members, service providers and residents to celebrate a shared vision for the future of Galway ’s West Area, a place known for its strong community spirit, independent businesses, and distinctive cultural and built heritage.

Supported by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA) under the THRIVE programme, the Strategy provides a framework for the sustainable regeneration of the Dominick Street and West End neighbourhoods. It sets out a series of actions, including the improvement of key public spaces and streets, support for active travel and better connections between the West Area and the wider city centre, targeted support for local businesses and cultural venues, and collaborative projects to protect and enhance local heritage.

The THRIVE event also showcased a range of initiatives promoting community wellbeing, social inclusion, arts and culture, and local economic development, underlining the importance of partnership between communities, businesses and public bodies in shaping a vibrant and resilient city centre.

Galway City Council extends its thanks to all who contributed to the development and launch of the West Area Integrated Urban Strategy and looks forward to working with partners and residents to deliver these actions over the coming years.
