Galway City Council is proud to support, and participate, in the national ‘Live for Lorcan’ campaign, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to the safety and wellbeing of its staff and the wider public.

The Live for Lorcan initiative takes a deeply personal approach to safety, inspired by the tragic loss of Lorcan Deasy in a workplace accident in 2018. The Live for Lorcan campaign was established by Lorcan’s mother Marian Deasy with Electric Skyline, and is supported by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), and the Minister of State for Small Business, Retail and Employment, Alan Dillon TD.

Through training, briefings and communications, the campaign carries a powerful message centred on personal responsibility, shared accountability, and the importance of making safe choices every day. It highlights that workplace safety is not just about procedures and compliance, but about people, their families, and the importance of returning home safely at the end of each day.

As part of its involvement, Galway City Council’s hosted a ‘Live for Lorcan’ High Impact Safety Seminar on 25 June, with Marian Deasy giving the keynote speech to operations staff. The High Impact Staff Safety Seminar is one of the stated objectives in Galway City Council’s Annual Health and Safety Programme 2026, supporting its commitment to achieving ISO45001 accreditation by strengthening safety awareness, promoting behavioural safety and a positive safety culture and reinforcing the importance of every employee returning home safely each day.

Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Helen Ogbu, emphasised the significance of the initiative:

“This is an important campaign to remind crews at work to take the extra step to take care of themselves and each other. The work our teams carry out every day across the city is essential, but it can also involve risk, and it is vital that safety remains at the forefront of everything we do. Every crew member is a valued colleague, friend and family member, and we all want them to come home safely. Initiatives like Live for Lorcan help keep that human focus at the centre of our decision-making and reinforce the responsibility we all share in creating a safer workplace.”

Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Leonard Cleary, acknowledged the vital role of public cooperation in ensuring safe working environments across the city:

“Safety is our priority in Galway City Council – for both the public and our crews – and creating a safe working environment is a shared responsibility. I would like to thank the public for their cooperation and patience when works are ongoing in the city. Our teams often work in busy, live environments, and the support of the public in following signage, respecting barriers and allowing crews the space they need to work safely is very important and greatly appreciated. Through the Live for Lorcan campaign, we are continuing to strengthen our safety culture and ensure that the wellbeing of our staff and the public remains at the heart of all our operations.”

Galway City Council will be rolling out campaign materials and safety messaging across its operations, including safety briefings, toolbox talks and site communications, to ensure that the campaign’s message remains visible, relatable and impactful for all staff.

By participating in Live for Lorcan, Galway City Council continues to strengthen its strong safety culture, placing people at the heart of all its operations and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that every member of staff returns home safely each day.
