Galway City Council has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien TD, of €400,000 in funding for Galway City under the new €2 million ‘Cities Mission Accelerator’ Fund.
As part of the funding allocation, Galway City Council will deliver a range of practical climate measures, including retrofitting of council buildings. These projects will help reduce carbon emissions, strengthen climate resilience, enhance biodiversity, and improve the urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
The Cities Mission Accelerator Fund, announced by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, will support Galway, Cork and Dublin in advancing projects under the European Union's Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission.
Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Helen Ogbu said, "This funding is a welcome investment in Galway's climate ambitions and demonstrates the value of partnership between local and national government in addressing climate challenges. The projects supported under this fund will deliver tangible benefits for our communities while helping Galway play its part in Ireland's transition to a low-carbon future.”
Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive, Galway City Council said, “The 2026 Accelerator Fund represents a significant opportunity for Galway City Council to enhance the delivery of climate actions at a local level. We are delighted to receive this support from the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, which will help us deliver practical projects that reduce carbon emissions, enhance biodiversity, and improve quality of life for communities across Galway City.”
Galway City Council has been progressing a wide range of climate action initiatives through its Climate Action Plan and participation in European climate programmes. The Council remains committed to working with local communities, businesses, academic institutions and other stakeholders to deliver meaningful climate action across the city.
The Cities Mission Accelerator Fund forms part of the Government's wider support for climate action at local authority level and will assist Galway City in advancing projects that contribute to national and European climate objectives.
