Galway City Council is pleased to confirm that works are now commencing on the €19 million redevelopment of Galway City Museum, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of one of the city’s most important cultural and tourism infrastructure projects.
The project is supported by Fáilte Ireland, which is contributing €12.6 million towards the overall €19 million redevelopment, in partnership with Galway City Council.
The redevelopment will deliver a new three-storey extension, enhanced exhibition and education spaces, improved accessibility, upgraded structural and drainage systems, and a new Spanish Arch viewing point overlooking one of Galway’s most iconic heritage locations. The project represents a major investment in Galway’s cultural future and will strengthen the city’s position as a leading destination for heritage, learning, and tourism.
Carey Building Contractors have been appointed to deliver the works, with construction activity now beginning on site. Galway City Council’s Project Development Team will oversee project governance, communications, and stakeholder engagement throughout the construction period.
Speaking today, the Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Leonard Cleary, said: “This redevelopment is a transformative investment in Galway’s cultural infrastructure. The expanded Museum will offer new opportunities for learning, interpretation, and community engagement, while also enhancing the visitor experience and supporting the wider tourism economy.”
Construction will be managed to minimise disruption to local businesses, residents, and visitors. Regular updates will be issued through Galway City Council’s communication channels, including website notices, social media, and Councillor briefings.
