Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, and Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Jerry Buttimer TD, announced the successful projects under the Local Enhancement Programme (LEP) 2026 on Thursday, 2 July 2026.
A total of €146,293.30 has been allocated to 79 projects across Galway City. This funding will support small-scale capital works and the purchase of essential equipment for community use.
The funding may be used for a wide range of purposes, including enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities, supporting participation by disadvantaged and marginalised groups, and improving energy efficiency in community facilities to help reduce ongoing operating costs.
Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Helen Ogbu, said:
“The Local Enhancement Programme is invaluable for the many groups and volunteers who work tirelessly across Galway City. This funding helps them continue their important work and ensures our communities remain vibrant, inclusive and well supported.”
Chief Executive of Galway City Council, Leonard Cleary, welcomed the announcement, stating:
“This funding represents a meaningful investment in Galway City’s communities. It empowers local organisations to continue delivering essential services, activities and supports that strengthen neighbourhoods and enhance quality of life.”
The Local Enhancement Programme 2026 was launched in December 2025 and provides €7 million nationally in capital funding to support small community groups and organisations, particularly those serving disadvantaged areas in both rural and urban settings. More than 4,100 individual projects will be supported across Ireland this year.
Galway City Council administers the programme on behalf of Galway City Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) and is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.
