During the month of May 2026, Galway City Council Age Friendly Programme is partnering with Eye Cinema and Galway ‘Platinum Picture Show’ to enable a succession of screenings to celebrate the ‘Bealtaine Festival’ – with the first 40 tickets free for each screening! Bealtaine is Ireland’s national festival celebrating the arts and ageing. The Platinum Picture Show is a specialised screening for older adults in Galway City, running all year long.

Tickets are usually €7.50 per person but Galway City Council will cover the first 40 tickets for each screening in May. This allows the first 40 people to attend each movie for free.

EYE Cinema has put together a curated selection of Irish made films, world cinema titles, and popular blockbusters covering all genres. The Platinum Picture Show Bealtine Festival screenings are on every Friday at 12 noon, as below:

  • Friday 1 May: ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’

  • Friday 8 May: ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

  • Friday 15 May: ‘Once Upon a Time in a Cinema’

  • Friday 22 May: ‘Sirat’

  • Friday 29 May: ‘My Mother’s Wedding’

Free tea/coffee is available every Friday morning before the show, and the cinema doors open at 11:30am to allow Platinum Picture Show guests to sit down for a chat ahead of the film.

These screenings are aimed at members of the community who are retired, but anyone free on a Friday morning is more than welcome.

Chiara Oriani, Film Programmer, EYE Cinema said, “We have been offering our ‘Platinum Picture Show’ screenings for about a year now and it has been an absolute pleasure to engage with the older members of our community and seeing them coming back to the cinema every week, happy to experience a different film every time.”

Joe Maguire, Volunteer Older Persons Council Member added, “It serves a dual function of providing film entertainment at a time that suits many older people and a chance to socialise over tea and coffee in a comfortable environment. Friendships have been formed and, in some cases, renewed. The Bealtaine initiative both rewards the regular attendees and encourages newcomers to join.”
