Non-statutory public consultation will commence on the proposed Urban Design Vision for the Murrough Lands on Friday 23 October.

The plan outlines an ambitious strategic framework to transform 34 hectares of land in the east of the city into sustainable, well-connected neighbourhoods – with up to 2,500 new homes, a new rail station, flood defences, play facilities, open green spaces and community hubs.

Feedback is invited through a ‘drop in’ event in ATU on 5 November, or online through the online consultation portal, see https://Consult.GalwayCity.ie/en/Browse.

The public consultation will close at 5pm on Monday 23 November.

Strategic Details of the Murrough Lands Vision

The proposed Urban Design Vision introduces a comprehensive masterplan designed to establish a vibrant, transport-orientated coastal community. Key features of the proposal include:

  • Significant Housing Delivery: The framework maps out the long-term potential to accommodate up to 2,500 new homes, significantly boosting the city’s residential capacity.
  • Transport-Orientated Infrastructure: The vision integrates sustainable active travel and public transit links, incorporating a proposed new rail station, the routing of the Galway-Dublin Greenway, and an expanded network of dedicated cycleways and footpaths.
  • Coastal Protection and Flood Defence: Given the ecologically sensitive coastal environment, the plan prioritises climate resilience by planning for a new linear coastal amenity and integrated flood defence framework.
  • Public Amenities and Open Spaces: A substantial portion of the landbank will be reserved for public recreation, aiming to deliver critical neighbourhood amenities like structured play facilities, open green spaces, and community hubs.
