Buildings and places of significance, be they modest or grand, are in their own way historical documents which can be read and interpreted.
As an historic inheritance, these places provide an invaluable link to our shared past and the people who created them, whilst enriching our built and natural landscapes, and our everyday lives.
Understanding a building or place before undertaking works is the first essential step in conservation, this first step is important to ensure that they are sensitively managed and adapted whilst still retaining their essential special character.
This approach to understanding, set out in ICOMOS Burra Charter* as principles, process, and practices, highlights the need to establish the significance of a place, and provides guidance for the conservation and management of places of cultural significance.
