Europe Day celebrates peace, solidarity and cooperation across the continent and is observed each year on 9 May. It commemorates the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a landmark proposal that laid the foundations for a united Europe dedicated to lasting peace and economic cooperation. The day highlights Europe's shared achievements while promoting a sense of common identity among its rich cultural diversity.
To celebrate Europe Day, Galway City Council will light up City Hall in blue on the 9th of May 2026.
To strengthen the organisation’s engagement with European Union funding opportunities and to enhance cross-departmental collaboration on EU‑supported initiatives, Galway City Council recently announced the establishment of its new EU Project Unit.
