West Area Integrated Urban Strategy - Key Themes

The West Area is a distinctive and vibrant neighbourhood within Galway City. Located just beyond the original city walls and separated from the city centre by the River Corrib, it has a rich and evolving history. Once a hub of industry, the area flourished as a place of trade following the opening of the canal in 1852. Today, it continues to thrive, supported by a strong and active business community.

This part of the city is defined by its network of waterways, charming residential terraces, and a lively mix of shops, bars, cafés, and restaurants. It’s home to several significant historic buildings, structures and spaces, all interwoven with formal and informal green spaces. These elements combine to give the West Area a truly unique character and identity—one we’re excited to explore further with you.

We want to hear from you. What do you love about the West Area? What challenges do you see, and what improvements do you think should be prioritised?

Some of the key themes we hope to explore together include:

  • Heritage, character, and identity

  • Climate resilience, biodiversity, and greening

  • Movement and accessibility
