Public Lighting Update December 2025

Galway city at night from the air

In January 2025, Storm Éowyn caused significant damage nationwide.

In Galway City, there was significant damage to woodlands, power lines, parks, pitches, public lighting and traffic light systems, among other impacts.

Following the storm, of the thousands of public lights that were affected, some nine estates in Galway City were not approved to be restored by the ESB until infrastructural work was completed in accordance with the standards.

When a fault occurs on this old infrastructure, repair works are prohibited under ESB and Safe Electric regulations.

Significant emergency works have been carried out to six estates to date.

In total six estates have been completed and reenergised and works on the remaining three estates commenced on the 08/12/25.

The work requires coordination with a contractor and the ESB.
