A Chara,
Galway City Council wishes to advise that essential maintenance and improvement works are scheduled for Blackrock Diving Tower during April and May 2026. These works form part of our ongoing commitment to public safety and to ensuring that Blackrock continues to operate as a safe, high-quality amenity for all users.
Details of the planned works are outlined below, with accompanying images provided on the following pages.
1. Localised resurfacing on the main access walkway
The walkway has been damaged over the years by successive storms. The works will include resurfacing the areas as shown in blue in figure 1 below. Unfortunately, the works will require closure of the Tower for up to three days. This closure is necessary to allow the works to be carried out safely and to ensure appropriate concrete curing times. Galway City Council will endeavour to schedule these works at times that minimise disruption, however, they must be undertaken during low-tide conditions and, ideally, during dry weather.
2. Installation of a new stainless-steel stairs on the western side of the Tower.
The new stairs will replace the original stairs lost a number of years ago on the west side of the tower. It will restore safer access and exit to the water. This will cause minimal disruption for access to the tower.
3. Installation of additional handrailing on the western side of the access platform.
A small section of additional rail will be added at the location as shown below in Figure 2. This measure was recommended in the Risk Assessment undertaken by International Life Saving Federation and will help reduce fall risks in an area where there is a significant drop onto rocks. It is particularly important given that footfall on this side of the Tower is expected to increase once the new stairs are installed. Unofficial access route from the rear of the changing‑room wall where people sit will be maintained. The works will cause minimal disruption for access to the tower.
Although temporary closures will be required, the long-term outcome will be a safer and improved amenity for all users. Further updates will be issued once the exact dates for these works are confirmed.
We appreciate your cooperation and patience during these works and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
