Scheme Overview
Construction works on a new pedestrian crossing at the Salmon Weir Bridge are to get underway from November 3, 2025.
The Salmon Weir Bridge Pedestrian Crossing Project entails the construction of a temporary pedestrian crossing across the R863 University Road at Galway Cathedral. This will be a toucan crossing (i.e. signal controlled crossing for use by walkers, wheelers and cyclists). It will connect the footway on University Road near Fisheries Field to Droichead an Dóchais and will improve safety for all road users.
Brian Conneely and Co. Ltd. have been appointed to construct this project on behalf of Galway City Council. Some of the works will take place at night. Works will be paused from before Christmas until January 6, 2026 in order to minimise disruption in the pre-Christmas period.
Motorists
While there will be some traffic disruption as a result of these works, two-way vehicular traffic will be maintained during peak hours. Lane closures may be required at off-peak times. Signage will be erected to advise motorists of the works.
Walkers, Wheelers and Cyclists / Pedestrians
Disruption is also envisaged for walkers and wheelers, as footways along Salmon Weir Bridge and University Road will be closed during certain periods. Some of the works will take place at night. Signage will be erected on both sides of Salmon Weir Bridge, as necessary, to advise users of alternative, safe routes.
Droichead an Dóchais will not be impacted by these works and will be fully open at all times.
