Galway City Council Welcomes Resumption of Process to Develop Future Transport Policy

Galway City Council welcomes the reactivation of the Galway Metropolitan Area Transportation Strategy (GMATS) by the National Transport Authority (NTA). This important Strategy will identify the transport needs for Galway and inform the future development of Galway, enabling it to continue to serve as the economic and cultural centre of the West of Ireland.

Notice of Upcoming Road Closure – Ballybane Road

23 April 2026

Road Closures will be in place from 9.30am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday from Monday April 27 for approximately three weeks. The closures will be in place on the Ballybane Road from St. James Road to the Monivea Road junction, followed by potential short closures on Monivea Road East and West at the junction of Ballybane Road.

Awards Success for Galway City Active Travel Project

Galway City Council is delighted to have won the ‘Best Community Transport Initiative’ Award at the 2026 LAMA All-Ireland Community and Council Awards in recognition for a first-of-its-kind active travel project in the heart of the city.
