Climate Mitigation Projects

As part of our Local Authority Climate Action Plan (LACAP), Galway City Council continues to progress our 2030 energy efficiency and carbon reduction targets, as part of our transition to a sustainable energy future.

Westside Renewable Energy-Powered eMobility Hub

Introduction

Galway City Council’s Westside Renewable Energy-Powered eMobility Hub is a first-of-its-kind project in Ireland, combining renewable energy, shared electric transport, and public EV charging in one location. Situated in Galway’s Decarbonisation Zone, the hub supports climate action, energy independence, and inclusive access to low-emission transport.

Project Overview

The hub has two key components:

A solar-powered shared mobility hub, offering e-bikes, e-cargo bikes, and electric vehicles for public use via app-based booking.

A public EV charging hub, providing fast and medium-speed chargers for residents, particularly those without access to home charging.

The system is powered by 91 rooftop solar panels on the Westside Community Centre, supported by a 150kWh battery and smart energy management. This setup reduces grid demand, stores excess energy, and exports surplus power back to the grid.

Benefits and Impacts

The hub provides affordable, clean transport options for residents, commuters, and local businesses. It supports Galway’s Climate Action Plan by reducing emissions, promoting shared mobility, and making EV charging accessible to residents who may not have private parking and taxi drivers.

Residents within the Decarbonisation Zone benefit from reduced-cost charging and promotional access to shared EVs and bikes, helping to make EV use and sustainable transport more accessible and equitable.

Collaboration and Innovation

The project was delivered through a multi-partner collaboration involving Galway City Council, ESB, Electric Skyline, ATU, Trinity College Dublin, Enterprise Car Club, as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA), and serves as a national pilot for future eMobility infrastructure.

Future Plans

Galway City Council is exploring opportunities to expand eMobility infrastructure to other neighbourhoods, integrate additional renewable energy sources, and enhance accessibility for all users. Lessons from the Westside hub will inform future transport and energy initiatives across the city.

Conclusion

The Westside eMobility Hub is a landmark in Galway’s climate journey. By combining renewable energy, shared transport, and inclusive access, it sets a new standard for sustainable mobility, offering a replicable model for cities across Ireland.
