Climate Mitigation projects
As part of the SEAI Pathfinder Programme, Knocknacarra Community Centre was selected for deep energy retrofit works to meet 2030 energy efficiency and carbon reduction targets. The centre is a top 10 Significant Energy User (SEU) in the Galway City Council building stock. The centre, originally built in 2005 is a dry sports and leisure facility with multipurpose rooms, offices, changing areas, and a sports hall open to the general public. It also underwent an expansion in 2015.
The works carried out under the programme aimed to;
- Decrease in carbon emissions by at least 50%
- Improve the BER of the building to A3
- Integrate renewable energy technologies
- Improve thermal comfort and airtightness

Overall, these pathfinder works have resulted in;
- A 65.47% decrease in tco2 emissions to 2030 targets
- An annual saving of €28,499.00
- BER of the building being upgraded to A3
The Pathfinder works undertaken on Knocknacarra Community Centre demonstrates a comprehensive assessment of the building and its needs to decarbonise the S.E.U. Measures such as fabric upgrades, efficient heating systems, and renewable energy generation allowed the building to significantly exceed the minimum 2030 obligations and position the building for long-term sustainability.
