Climate Mitigation Projects

As part of our Local Authority Climate Action Plan (LACAP), Galway City Council continues to progress our 2030 energy efficiency and carbon reduction targets, as part of our transition to a sustainable energy future.

Climate Mitigation Projects

As part of the SEAI Pathfinder Programme, Ballinfoile Community Centre was selected for deep energy retrofit works to meet 2030 energy efficiency and carbon reduction targets. The centre, originally built in 2016 is a dry sports and leisure facility with multipurpose rooms, offices, changing areas, and a sports hall open to the public.

The works undertaken under this Pathfinder programme were to;

  • Decrease in carbon emissions by at least 50%

  • Improve the BER of the building to A2

  • Integrate renewable energy technologies

Description of work   Energy saved (kWh)

Install air-source heat pump

  73,506
Install 40kWp PV array   tCo2e saved towards 2030 target
LED lighting upgrade   15.82
    Cost saving / Year
    € 12,254.00

Overall, these works have allowed the building to achieve;

  • An annual saving of €12,254.00

  • BER of the building being upgraded to A2

The Pathfinder upgrades at Ballinfoile Community Centre represent a comprehensive assessment of the building’s decarbonisation needs, addressing energy performance, retrofit potential, and long-term sustainability. By implementing a highly efficient heating system and integrating a renewable energy technology, the project surpassed the 2030 target for the building and positioned it for long-term sustainability.
